Controversy and Progress Happen Simultaneously
3 Things You’ll Learn
- Why controversy does not mean God is not moving. Throughout Scripture, moments of tremendous progress were often accompanied by disorder, disagreement, rebellion, and human weakness.
- Why living for an Audience of One changes everything. Following God cannot ultimately depend on approval from friends, leaders, organizations, or even those who promise they will always stand with you.
- Why this generation must rise in its own moment. Just as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others stood courageously in their day, believers today must be willing to stand faithfully, lawfully, and peacefully for what is right.
Episode Description
Controversy and progress can happen at the very same time. When we look back at great moments in biblical or national history, everything can appear orderly from a distance. But when you look closer, you discover disagreement, resistance, mistakes, opposition, and imperfect people right in the middle of extraordinary progress.
Israel’s journey out of captivity was filled with complaining, rebellion, and challenges to Moses’ leadership. Even Jesus’ disciples argued about who would be greatest, and Peter once tried to correct Jesus concerning the very path He had come to fulfill. Yet God continued working. Why? Because God works through human beings, people just like you and me, with all our weaknesses and rough places.
Greg Lancaster reflects on the era of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and those who stood with him, including former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, as America confronted the moral question of how people should treat one another. Their progress did not come without controversy or opposition. The challenge for us is not simply to admire those who stood in another generation, but to ask what we will do in ours. Ultimately, we must learn to live for an Audience of One, knowing that each of us will stand before God and give an account for what we did with the moment He entrusted to us.
